About
Cheshire Homes, a unique charity institution, has its genesis in the aftermath of the human tragedy caused by World War II.Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, a former IAF pilot, who served as the British observer on the Nagasaki nuclearattack, is the founder of Cheshire Homes. After the war he resigned from the RAF and decided to devote the rest of his life to set up homes for the disabled and the other victims of the war. From a humble beginning in 1948, today it has grown into a network of over 200 independently managed Cheshire organisations working in 54 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, including 18 Cheshire Homes in India, serving the cause of the disabled.
Forty two years have gone by since the Thiruvananthapuram Cheshire Home was born in 1978. It was made possible with the unstinted support of the erstwhile Royal House of Travancore, the Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram, led by the late Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios, and a few non-resident Indians/Keralites. Set up in a picturesque and peaceful locale in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram City, the Home renders selfless, dedicated service to the physically challenged individuals, sans social or religious differentiation. Its sustained growth owes gratitude to the donations made by good hearted citizens, who believe in the adage that only by giving, one will receive more than what one already has.
Cheshire Home, Thiruvananthapuram, is administered by a Managing Committee, comprised of experienced people from different walks of life.
